Postdoctoral Position Announcement - Water

Position: Postdoctoral Research Associate, Visiting Scientist/Scholar

Location: American Institute for Goat Research, Langston University, Langston, OK

Scope of Work:

The long-term goal of the project is to gain a better understanding of factors affecting the utilization of brackish/saline water by small ruminants so that most appropriate management practices can be identified and adopted. Experiments will be conducted to determine responses of goats and sheep to different levels of total dissolved salts (TDS) in drinking water as varied by natural water sources and NaCl additions; identify factors affected by drinking water high in TDS that influence animal performance, such as change in feed intake, ruminal microbial and fermentation conditions, digestion, blood constituent levels, and energy metabolism; and quantify the extent of adaptation to consumption of high-TDS drinking water.

The person selected will be responsible for development of research protocols and conduct of trials, laboratory analyses, data handling, statistical analyses, data interpretation, and preparation of abstracts, peer-review manuscripts, and extension publications. The individual will work cooperatively with research and extension personnel of the American Institute for Goat Research, staff of the Research Farm and Central Laboratory, teaching faculty of the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, and participating undergraduate and graduate students.

Qualifications and Experience:

Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition, Animal Physiology, or a related field. Strong background in ruminant nutrition, preferably inclusive of research with goats and sheep. Demonstrated capabilities in conducting and supervising animal nutrition experiments and associated laboratory analyses, data handling, statistical analyses, data interpretation, and preparation and presentation of scientific reports and other publications. Capacity to work cooperatively with others, including students participating in research.

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Standard fringe benefits of Langston University are included in the package. The project does not cover costs of travel to the Langston University area or initial lodging until a residence is acquired.
